HiRes Models...

Hi,
Downloaded the trial and liked it but could not test on hi res models. Bought the non-commercial version with the idea of upgrading to commercial if it worked out.

Med res models are fine but but up into 500+K models the program is so unresponsive to be nearly unusable. Don't know how this can be dealt with except through extensive work arounds. Mainly cutting up the model and sticking the pieces back together with locked boundaries. I am quit surprised as I had a car model at 300,000 polys and the program slowed to a crawl. I tried others and the same happened.

Baffled in Sacramento...

Hi RonB,

I was curious to see if this would happen on my system so I generated a 1 million+ poly version of a ship model I have been working on. I noticed very little difference working with this model in Balancer as compared to a previous version at 300k poly's. Performance on my system was excellent all round.

Are these your own models or something you have obtained elsewhere?

My computer is a budget Toshiba laptop, Athlon X2 @ 2.1 GHz, 3 Gb ram, Radeon 3100 with 256 mb ram.

Hi mabrown,
Thanks for the reply. No they are not my own they are exports from Daz. Although running the same models through Polygon Cruncher hardly causes a bump in the road. I was quit surprised and a bit disappointed to tell you the truth as I saw the horse model on the Home Page here at 13 mil before I bought the program.

I don't know, maybe there is a conflict, but something is not right.

Hi again Ron,

I'm not very familiar with DAZ although I do have the current version of DAZ Studio installed. Is the content sold in obj format or do you load the model in a DAZ format and export as obj from there? Does the obj load ok or is that slow too?

I think it is worth trying a few things before you give up as that is definitely not how Balancer behaves on my machine. In fact it is very snappy, even with poly counts over a million.

BTW, what is your hardware spec?

Hi,
And thanks again for your help...It is much appreciated. Just curious and not complaining but are problems such as this normally handled by the user base? I am a little surprised/curious the owner/coder has not replied.

Anyway...Most of the Daz content comes into the program as obj's, (all of the ones I use are native obj's) and exported as obj's. I could load the models directly but I use Daz for posing the models.

Yes, the models load into Balancer slowly. I have tried models from other sources and Balancer acts the same.

I am running XP on a dual quad core Xeon 3.0Ghz with 6 gigs ram...should run the wheels off Balancer...

Hi Ron,

Not sure what has happened to the devs. Perhaps they are away. Might be worth sending an email direct to support.

This post seems to contain a problem similar to yours:

Do you have a link to a model which is giving you trouble that I could test?

Hi Ron,

Sorry for the delayed reply - we had some problems with forum notifications.

Balancer should be very fast both loading and simplifying very large models. I guess there is some problems or conflicts with visualization system. What are your graphics card? Do you have the latest graphics drivers installed?

If you have an NVidia card, please try to disable 'Threaded optimization' in 'Manage 3D Settings' of the NVIDIA card
Control Panel.

Also please try turning off 'Show Solid' and 'Show Wireframe' in the main toolbar of Balabcer or in Menu/View/Solid (Wireframe). This will turn on Points-only visualization that should be considerably faster. Turning off visualization of 'All Boundaries' can also make Balancer more responsive when visualization is slow.

Hope this will help to solve the problem of Balancer's slow performance on your system.

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for purchasing Balancer.
Kind regards.

Hi,

Silly me... Sad I really didn't even think about the NVidia 'Threaded Opts'...that was it...and I upgraded the drivers too.
It now loads any size model instantly and manipulates them with ease, no waiting, no muss no fuss!

I had pretty much left Balancer alone and not used it at all. I had figured it was something in my system conflicting with it.
But everything else was running so smoothly I didn't know where to start looking.
Of course the graphics card is the logical choice...but I am not much of an under the hood guy... Sick

I will go back and do some comparing of it to Polygon Cruncher and see how that goes. Smile

Thanks much,
RonB
